Bursary

Bursary award was re-introduced in 1984 by the administration of Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande in line with the administration’s general populace outlook. The dwindling nature of the Government’s financial resources and the various projects competing for attention of the administration influenced the decision to replace the then scholarship award with bursary to all State indigenes in tertiary institutions within the country, rather than just a small number of beneficiaries enjoying scholarship prior to the advent of the administration.

The administration and implementation of the award was further enhanced by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The following rates were paid to each category of beneficiaries at that time:

  • Normal undergraduate award N10, 000.00 per session
  • Physically challenged award N20, 000.00 per session
  • Law School award N40, 000.00 per session

In the Year 2007, the present administration ensured that Bursary award rates were increased to meet with present economic realities. With the following rates approved:

This is to lighten their financial burden and it is paid once. A sum of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) only is also awarded to indigenes of the State studying in Maritime Academy.
