INDIGENSHIP VERIFICATION: LASG SCHOLARSHIP BOARD CLEARS PATH FOR LASU STUDENTS

Part of the VC’s tight schedule saw her host a team from the Lagos State Scholarship Board led by the Head of Scholarship Department, Mrs. Idowu Tinuola. The meeting, which also had in attendance, Chairman, LASU Independent Indigenship Verification Committee (IIVC) Prof. Segun Akinyemi and Secretary of the Committee, Mr. Afinah, took place at the Vice Chancellor’s office this afternoon.

According to the team leader, the visit was for the purpose of soliciting the VC’s support for the orientation of students of the University on available scholarship and bursary opportunities for them.

Mrs. Idowu also announced to the delight of the VC that in view of the painstaking process that LASU students go through to verify their indigenship before admission into the university, the Board has decided to henceforth, exempt students of the University who are indigens, from the interview stage of the scholarship process.

She explained that the state’s scholarship, designed for students with a CGPA of 3.5 and above involved a CBT examination and an interview stage for successful students after which winners are selected. However, with LASU’s rigorous screening exercise, students of the institution would no longer do indigenship verification interview after passing their CBT exams.

The Bursary, she also announced, is available for all indigens of the University annually.

The VC, in her response was appreciative of the Board’s initiative. “I am happy that for the first time ever, LASU students are going to be enjoying this benefit from the Board. I particularly appreciate Prof. Akinyemi who had been doing well on the IIVC. It’s because of your effort that LASU is now being exempted. On the issue of orientation of our students, we will carry all relevant departments of the University along to ensure that all our students key into the bursary and scholarship”, she said.

Earlier, Prof. Akinyemi, revealed that LASU’s IIVC screening is rigorous to prevent false claims of indigenship by prospective students. He also noted that LASU gives admission to all deserving students, indigens and non indigens, but the right processes must be followed.
